Introduction

Discovery Through Science

If you ask any doctor, scientist, or healthcare professional what their favorite subject is, a majority of them will answer with science. This statistic arises from the fact that science is the foundation of medicine. Formally defined as the system of building and organizing information about the universe through testable explanations and predictions, science is used to explain the unknown. In turn, medicine is the application of science to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. With this being said, science becomes an essential part of my educational journey as an aspiring pathologist.

Pathology is the study of diseases and post-mortem; in other words, diagnosing and examining the dead. Science is especially crucial to this branch of medicine because of the lack of information and resources. When someone is dead, they cannot express their symptoms, past health records, or detail the last moments before their death. However, science creates a system of testing that can prove evidence-based predictions right or wrong. This trial and error can determine the unknown and add to our knowledge. Besides directly aiding in medicinal knowledge, science also plays a role in the advancement of pathology and other fields of medicine through technology. Innovations in science like DNA testing, MRI’s, and x-ray have increased success rates and sped up medical processes among physicians and scientists alike. In brief, science plays a role in my educational journey as it will aid me later on in my career goal of becoming a pathologist.

In conclusion, science plays an important role in the medical field. From providing technological innovations to a foundation for discovery and experimentation, doctors, scientist, and healthcare physicians all utilize science in their day-to-day professional lives. It can be said, that without science, humans would live in a solitude of ignorance and naivety. As a result, it is indispensable if I want to become a good pathologist, that I master the sciences for with science, I can explain but without science, I can only observe.
